A 300 level student of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), (name withheld) has been arrested for alleged illegal possession of a firearm by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun State.

The suspect, 24, according to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Kareem Olanrewaju, made available to Saturday Tribune, was caught with the firearm at Tekobi, Idi-Aba area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Thursday morning.

The suspect, upon interrogation claimed that the gun belonged to a friend who lived in the same vicinity.

According to the PRO, the suspect was arrested when he allegedly burgled a Toyota Camry marked LAGOS FFF 593 AA and stole the car battery belonging to a resident of the area.

The suspect with his gang members at large, were reported to have been under watch by residents of the community.

The gang members were said to have escaped arrest, having sighted the search team of the NSCDC.

However, the suspect denied knowledge of burgling the car.

Items recovered from the suspect include one international passport and one withdrawal slip belonging to one Joseph Olayinka, one SS 111 student, Adenuga Olasubomi‘s identity card, an official identity card of a Kosofe Local government staffer, charms, Sim card, others.
