Fake leaders: Youth council denies endorsing Buhari, warns impersonators

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has dissociated itself from the reported endorsement of the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari, in the forthcoming presidential election.

The President of the council, Mallam Bello Shagari in a statement in Abuja on Monday, urged youth leaders in the country to desist from partisan politics as the council is not involved in that as any form of endorsement is not in the interest of Nigerian youths.

“The recent involvement of group of people parading themselves as members of the National Youth Council into partisan politics is a cause for worry to all youths in Nigeria especially when one looks into the constitution, the council is not political.

“We believe that they were sponsored to do so by some desperate businessmen and politicians against our resistance to ever endorse any candidate in the name of the Nigerian youth.

“It is pertinent to note, that the National Youth Council of Nigeria is a non partisan organisation and thereby cannot indulge into partisan politics.

“Since our emergence on 24th July, 2018 in an election supervised by the Ministry of Youth & Sports, our leadership has been faced with opposition by some government cronies, businessmen and top politicians who have worked tirelessly to spoil the efforts of the Minister for Youth & Sports development, Barrister Solomon Dalung who has consistently urged us to abide by the books focus more on youth development rather than politics of awards and endorsement.

Due to our concerted efforts not to join partisan politics, it has become difficult to even facilitate a meeting for the leadership of the Nigerian Youth with President Muhammadu Buhari at the state house since our inception into office because those who are roaming in our name have infiltrated the State House and have gained their support using various means.

However, I will like to state for a fact that the National Youth Council of Nigeria under my leadership will continue to be a non partisan, all inclusive, responsive and will work to protect the integrity and credibility of the organization in the interest of all Nigerian youth of all groups, creeds, and political affiliations. We remain objective and will work with the government of the day for the development of Nigerian youth.
