Gombe states Commissioner of Health, Dr Kenedy Ishaya, says keeping cats at home as pets could serve as preventive measure against lassa fever.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Monday that cats could play the role of guards by scaring away rats that infect people with the disease.

He said Lassa fever cases were being recorded in most of the states in the North East sub-region,  hence the need to take recautionary measures by using natural predators.

He also emphazized the need for people to maintain personal hygiene.

“People must ensure that they keep their environnement clean, particularly stores and kitchen, so that rats will not have a hiding place.

“Cover your food properly so that rats will not urinate or defacate on it because their urine and faeces contains the virus as their bite,” he advised. (NAN)
